New Delhi : According to Ministry of Education statistics, in the last five years, 140 private universities have been founded nationwide, with the most of them located in Gujarat, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. 28 private institutions have opened in Gujarat over the past five years, while 15 universities have opened in Maharashtra, according to data that PTI was able to get. During that time, Madhya Pradesh welcomed 14 universities, whereas Karnataka welcomed 10.

According to a senior education ministry official, "Private universities are established by an Act passed by the concerned state legislature and Notification issued by the concerned state government." "The University Grants Commission (UGC) adds a private university's name to its list of universities in accordance with Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, upon receipt of copies of the Act and notification from the university," the speaker stated. According to the official, these private universities have the authority to grant general degree programs without the UGC's express consent.
